Norris University Center, Northwestern University

Pace Systems put the AV into the Norris University Center’s outdoor pavilion and Campus Pub for Northwestern University.

A curved line-array loudspeaker hung from a steel frame under the Covered Platform Pavilion’s timber canopy.

The Challenge

Northwestern University needed dependable AV for outdoor events at the Norris University Center’s Covered Platform Pavilion and for hospitality use in the Campus Pub, with a shared equipment room serving both.

Those two spaces ask for different things, because the pavilion has to carry performances, presentations and announcements outdoors while the pub needs displays and sound for its guests every day.

The Solution

At the pavilion we put in the outdoor audio on d&b loudspeakers hung under the canopy, with Yamaha mixing, Q-SYS and Dante behind them, Shure wireless microphones for whoever is on stage and a Panasonic 4K PTZ camera, which pans, tilts and zooms by remote so one operator can follow a performance.

In the Campus Pub we installed commercial displays for the bar and the booths and fed them with AV-over-IP, which means a display can show any source on the network instead of being tied to the box behind it.

Crestron control covers the pub, the pavilion and the shared equipment room together, so the staff who run the building work one system instead of a separate one for each space.

  • Outdoor audio
  • 4K PTZ camera
  • Shure wireless microphones
  • Displays
  • AV-over-IP
  • Crestron control
  • The timber underside of the pavilion’s round canopy, with two line-array loudspeakers hung on steel frames and a projector in a white housing.
  • Two booths in the Campus Pub, each with a display on the back wall under black pendant lights.

The Result

Northwestern’s staff run the pavilion and the pub together, for performances, presentations, announcements and hospitality.

  • 2 spacesthe pavilion and the Campus Pub, on one system
  • Crestroncontrol across both, and the equipment room
